Beautiful pink lotus bud. Like fruits - lotus are harvested in various stages and used as food resource, offerings to Buddha or for decoration in Cambodia. Pink lotus might be the queen of all Cambodian lotus flower and one of the most widely spread across the country. The pink lotus is the common color used for offerings to Buddha in pagodas of Cambodia.

Children are always very inventive and their imaginations know no boundaries especially when it comes to gardening. mad_hatter.jpgAs Joe Swift mentioned earlier, the Children's Quirky Container Competition was a great example of this. Schools across the Cheshire area have submitted an amazing range of interesting and unusual containers to be judged by visitors to the show. I had a look through and was really surprised by how good they were, from small scale exhibits like the Mad Hatter's Tea Party, entered by Bexton Primary School, Knutsford to a large scale container made from a Piano. piano.jpgCreated by Park Royal School, Macclesfield, this was entitled Keys to Health and Happiness! (get it!) It looked spectacular although I can't help wondering what the music teacher thought? There is one container that I know will particularly appeal to my colleague Louise. St Anne's Fulshaw, Church of England School created a chest shaped container overflowing with bright nasturtiums and other bedding plants, entitledchest.jpg Ooh Arrgh Pirate's Treasure (She's from Cornwall you know). The RHS are very keen to encourage children to get into gardening and are actively campaigning for it to be added to the school curriculum, with young minds as inventive as this, it can only be a good thing. Also as part of the Tatton tenth anniversary celebrations Children under 15 get into the show free this year.

I decided to title this flower photo with "fruit flower", because this each little flower, making a form like some fruit, and nice colour too.

Purple water lily of Cambodia grows almost entirely in very dirty, muddy or polluted waters. Water lilies like so many other plants convert pollution into something reusable by nature and humans.
The purple water lily is an example of how powerful God's nature is - to grow from dirty soil in dirty polluted water and to produce such splendid beauty and sweetest nectar for us.

Best in show was awarded to Matthew Soper of Hampshire Carnivorous Plants and he was delighted. carnivorous_300x150.jpg"This is a very special year, not only because of this award at Tatton Park but it means we have won ten consecutive golds at Chelsea, ten at Hampton Court, ten at BBC Gardeners' World Live and now ten at Tatton Park and best in show. I couldn't be more pleased, it's fantastic!" Well done to Matthew. I couldn't mention the floral marquee again without letting you know how Medwyn Williams got on. Well, his gold medal record is as unblemished as his prize winning vegetables; another gold for Medwyn and an unbroken record. And to top it off the sun is shining! I'm really not used to this at a flower show, I might have to go and have a lie down. In the sun. With an ice cream perhaps...

One mother-plant dwarf lotus with seve ral runners. Unique to this Cambodian dwarf lotus is the one mother plant brining up a long stem from the bottom of the pond. From each long stem originating from the mother plant - a small group of lotus leaves and several lotus flowers result in a small floating array. Once such a group of floating lotus leaves/flowers is completed, the dwarf lotus creates a runner some 50-100 cm long and then creates another floating array of leaves and lotus blossoms.
If you know the strawberry plant-runners, the dwarf lotus look very much the same. Hence most of these lotus leaves have NO direct connection to the mother plant or to the soil at the bottom of the pond, but only thru the runner with the previous lotus flower group floating at the water surface. An interesting anatomy / physiology of a lotus plant.
On the image you clearly see several long and stronger runners from group to group with small arrays of lotus leaves and lotus blossoms in each such lotus array.
Each such mini-arrangement has several leaves around the center and several blossoms. Typically a few blossoms are open at a time. Many tiny small lotus buds ready to blossom.
The following picture shows another dwarf lotus in natural environment in Cambodia.
